Meet our Tour Guides: Nanno

This week we spoke with Nanno, who is a true Amsterdam local. He’s been living in the city for over 45 years. His passion for the city led him to become a tour guide. One of the things he really enjoys about it is that he gets to share the local culture with visitors to the city.

Here are his answers to our questions:

Q: How did you become a tour guide?
A: I became a tour guide around ten years ago, due to my passion for this beautiful city.

Q: Why would you recommend doing a food tour?
A: Food connects people. It’s very easy to tell stories around food, and this opens up conversations. And, of course, love for food is universal.

Q: What would be your number 1 tip for someone who has only a few days to spend in Amsterdam (besides a food tour)?
A: I’d recommend doing a bicycle tour in Amsterdam North, especially for younger people. And a walking tour in the city center is also a great option.

Q: What is your favorite food, and where in Amsterdam do you most like to eat it?
A: I love all kinds of food, but if I have to choose then I’d say I prefer fish. Two of my favorite restaurants, where you can also order great fish, are De Plantage and Café Restaurant Amsterdam.

Q: What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned during your time as a (food) tour guide?
A: Even though I’ve lived in Amsterdam for so long, I’ve discovered many more interesting and beautiful places in the city since becoming a tour guide. Hidden squares and beautiful small churches, for example. And I share these hidden gems with the guests on my tours.

Q: What other tours do you provide, besides the food tours?
A: I also do traditional walking tours in the city center and bicycle tours in Amsterdam North.

When you do a food tour with Nanno, you know that you’re doing a tour with a true Amsterdam local. You get to explore the culture from a local perspective, and you discover hidden gems that others often wouldn’t notice. You also have the chance to ask all the questions you have about Amsterdam and the local way of life.
