Grand Dutch Food & History Tour - Private Experience
Enjoy the luxury and benefits of a private tour
See and taste the best of Amsterdam in a private group
Enjoy a high-quality private food walking tour that brings Dutch cuisine, history, and culture together as you stroll through the Jordaan and along Amsterdam’s famous canals. Along the way, you’ll taste both classic and modern Dutch dishes at local specialty shops, cafés, and restaurants loved by Amsterdammers.
Explore the city at your own pace with a dedicated guide, offering an even more comfortable and unhurried experience than the shared group tour, filled with engaging conversations about anything you’d like to know.
Thanks to being a genuine Amsterdam company and our many years of close relationships with our food partners and friends—often giving us exclusive access—you’ll feel welcome everywhere and enjoy a genuine behind-the-scenes experience.
With our unique mix of professional and semi-professional guides, all connected to the city for at least 15 years, you’ll hear real, personal stories and gain true insight into everyday life in Amsterdam.
What you’ll eat and drink
There are four, slightly, different tasting menus available during the week. This is because we only work with small, authentic businesses, and some of them are not open every day. We also like to take the opportunities each day offers—such as visiting the market on Saturday—and each season brings new flavors to the table. What never changes is the quality: every tour features unique places serving the very best of Dutch food and drinks. Please find our tastings per day below but keep in mind this may still vary.
Non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages of your choice are included, such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, wine, craft beer, and jenever.

We had an excellent afternoon with Katya earlier this month on the Grand Dutch food tour. We enjoyed sampling many dishes that we would not have tried otherwise (herring, satay, cured meats) if we were to go out on our own. The nice touch and probably my favourite (toss up between that and the apple pie) was the Dutch wine and cheese tasting in the quiet back room of this cute shop. We were very fortunate to only have our family of 3 on the tour so we got extra attention and all of our crazy questions answered along the way as we love hearing unique historical facts. Thanks again for treating us so well.
We do a food tour in every new country we visit, and this was one of the absolute best! Great history tied into delicious food stops at just the right pace. Thijs was a wonderful guide.
We had a fabulous time with Rob on this tour. The pace was perfect, wandering around Amsterdam tasting wonderful food and drinks with interesting history snippets added in. Rob felt like a new friend we just met. Would highly recommend .
What a fantastic afternoon experiencing the local food & drink intertwined with the history of Amsterdam. It was a great personalised tour. It was like catching up with an old friend. Starting with apple pie (to die for), we enjoyed a wide range of food and drink with Rob. This tour is really worth it.
Jan is an incredible guide. His knowledge of the history of Amsterdam and its correlation to the food eaten here made the tour enjoyable for all ages. Not only did we sample amazing food and drink all throughout the city, but we were also treated to Amsterdam from a “local’s” point of view. Request Jan and I promise you won’t be disappointed!!!
We had the best time ever. Jan was an incredible guide that I would highly recommend. If we come back we will definitely use him again.
What an amazing tour. Our guide Jan was awesome! Very knowledgeable about the history and culture of Amsterdam. Our food stops were all different and represented the variety of foods that can be found in Amsterdam. All were very yummy!! I highly recommend this tour!!
I had the greatest time during my tour this past Sunday. Lots of good local food with a great guide. Each place has been picked carefully and represents different aspects of the city’s food universe, from the classic apple pie to Indonesian-inspired dish. Being in Amsterdam for a full week, I went back to many of the places. I recommend 100%!
We had such a wonderful time with Thijs on the Grand Dutch Food & History Tour! I expected good things, since Rick Steves gave Amsterdam Food Tours high marks in his Amsterdam travel book, but the tour exceeded expectations. It did not feel like a tour but having a lovely walk around the city with a friend, who knew all of the good spots to visit and enjoy fantastic food, beverages and experiences. As a bonus, we learned a great deal about the city and its history along the way. I would recommend the tour to everyone and when we visit Amsterdam again in the future, we will look to Amsterdam Food Tours to make the trip memorable.
We had an excellent Sunday tour with Thijs, and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting. We were only in the city for a couple days, so having this tour was the perfect combination of exploring a neighborhood, learning some history of the city, and trying lots of different types of foods (I will be thinking about the sandwich for a long time to come). Can’t think of a better introduction to Dutch cuisine, and only regret we aren’t here long enough to go back and try full meals at every place we stopped.
If you’re looking to experience the real Amsterdam beyond the usual tourist spots, this tour is absolutely perfect. It offers a fantastic journey through hidden corners, unique places, and special tastings that you wouldn’t come across on your own. The guide is empathetic and highly engaged, making the whole experience incredibly enjoyable and well worth every cent. For those who wish to explore Amsterdam through its food and culture, this tour is a golden opportunity.
We had a really great time on our Grand Dutch Food & History tour. Rudolph was an excellent guide – very knowledgeable, entertaining and also very humorous. The food and wine selection was very good and we learned a lot about Amsterdam, its history and its food culture. We would highly recommend the tour.
Enjoyable tour! So much valuable information shared with the group. All the food was delicious. Definitely recommend this food tour!
Just finished a tour with our excellent guide – David. He was informative and knowledgeable about the history as well as the food. His time management was good – we never felt rushed and yet we got to all the places. He was very comfortable to be with and answered all our questions. We got a true sense of the Dutch culture. And all the stops served up yummy food. We will not be needing to eat dinner tonight. Would absolutely recommend.
Jan did a great job providing a thorough and detailed history of Amsterdam as well as showcasing highlights of boutique dutch cheese, wine, and the delicious apple pie! I am thrilled with his genuine enthusiasm and would be glad to have Jan again as my tour guide, share a good meal and conversation. Highly recommended! (tour during mid August 2025)
Marc gave an amazing tour today, the excellent choice of stops gave a wonderful glimpse into Amsterdam life and history. From traditional apple cake, meats, cheeses, wines to Indonesian satay all wrapped in engaging stories and information about this beautiful city. Marc and the wonderful local businesses earned every one of the 5 stars!
Caroline was exceptional! Very knowledgeable and moved us through the experience at a good pace. Enjoyed the tour very much!
Loved the personal interaction with this wonderful guide. He was so knowledgeable and shared interesting information and history about Amsterdam. The food, wine, and gin we experienced was outstanding.
The tour was part history and part food. A perfect balance. Rudolph is a great guide, knowledgeable and entertaining. He is even funny some times.
We took the Grand Dutch Food and History tour today with Inbal. She was intelligent and engaging and managed the group and our experience well. The food stops were places that felt very local and provided exquisite tastes, which Inbal helped us understand. I would recommend this highly, and it was good value for money!
David was great. His knowledge of the area was excellent and he had very interesting stories and historic facts to share. we discovered all sorts of interesting local food and learned that the Nederland has wineries. We got to taste an excellent white while sampling some local cheese.
I enjoyed a fantastic time on the Amsterdam East (Oost) Food Tour with guide Anna. Only three of us were on the tour, and as we walked from place to place Anna shared interesting info about the neighborhoods, streets, and restaurants, adding in relevant historical perspective and more. You’ll eat a lot on the tour, so do come hungry. I think even deep foodies will get a lot out of the tour, and you’ll enjoy food from Surinam, Indonesia, India, Turkey, and more. Oost is such a vibrant area (and blissfully away from the throngs in the canal area)—feels a bit like Jackson Heights in Queens, with so many food cultures represented. I highly recommend this tour, especially if you’re curious and open. The pistachio, hazelnut, and chocolate baklava I had at Divan Patisserie (shown) was outstanding, as was the rest of the food.
Loved the food trip! Jan (pronounced Yan) presents delicious bites that are uniquely Amsterdam. And as you go from place to place, traverses every block of Amsterdam with details that you might find after reading a dozen history books. Or you can hear it from him with all the layers of nuance and context of first hand knowledge.
We had such a great time on the food tour with Rudolph! He was entertaining and very knowledgeable about the history of Amsterdam. It was great learning it from a local. The food and drinks were very generous at each stop, we particularly enjoyed the stop at the fish van at the markets, it was unique! I am pescatarian so I was well looked after when the charcuterie board came out at the wine store, which I greatly appreciated. Thanks Rudolph, we loved it! Very memorable!
Had a great food and history tour with Rudolph. He gave us a wonderful orientation to the history and culture of Amsterdam and the Netherlands, which was a great way to start our trip. The tour gave us the knowledge and confidence to order traditional Dutch food on the rest of our trip. I would not have tried the Herring without this tour, but I loved it and enjoyed it many more times during our vacation. Every food and beverage stop was a highlight, and ranged from Dutch cheese to Dutch wine to apple pie, to herring (surprise favorite!), to bitterballen. Rudolph was interesting and charming and made great conversation. Highly recommend this tour for those that love learning about local food and culture.
We had a wonderful tour with Rudolph. Got to try fantastic apple pie, cured herring and fried cod, cheeses, sausages, wine and beer. Rudolph is knowledgeable and fun to be with.
Rudolph was a fantastic host and guide; witty, humorous with just a bit of local “color” that made his commentary clever and sharp, with excellent and accurate depiction Amsterdam history. We experienced wonderful and authentic Amsterdam street food, wine tasting, cheese, fish and meat! A delightful experience we highly recommend!
We had a great food and walking experience with Amsterdam Food Tours. Annabelle was great. The food was fantastic. We all felt that we got a great variety of real Amsterdam food. We highly recommend. Thank you.
What an incredibly good introduction to Amsterdams history and food. Caroline spent her time immersing us in the Amsterdam we knew nothing about, and at various locations introduced us to the foods and wines of the country. Very accommodating and articulate, Caroline was a delight to spend our first day in Amsterdam with. Cannot recommend more highly for those visiting Amsterdam and wanting to know and taste this amazing place.
David was a wonderful guide. The pace was perfect and good/drinks were delicious Lekker! Thanks for an amazing day!
The Dutch food&history tour with Rudolph was nothing less than amazing. The rich variety of food places, the high quality, the generosity, the picant stories, the knowledge he shared, the humor, the easygoing character,- all in all gave us a deep unique look into the Dutch culinary and historical world and made us wish to come back to another round. What a lovely afternoon we had.
Fantastic tour with the perfect balance of food and history. Thijs was a wonderful, knowledgeable, and personable guide, and each stop on the tour introduced terrific local treats.
Today we meet with Roudolph. we got a personal tour of Amsterdam’s Finest’s, eateries. from fresh apple pies to Shrimp Croquettes, a Sauage sandwich, with cheese, open grills scour (Beef) with a peanut butter dressing. & a side of salad. finishing up with a cheese and wine tasting venue. (Of course we went back) the following day, for more. the following morning, Pancakes at Prin’s. (and meet his son)
Enjoyed the tour a lot. Friendly tour guide and nice rout. Highly recommend
Rudolph was a wonderful guide. There was plenty of food and wine. Skip breakfast and enjoy the interesting places, history, food and wine along the way.
We have done food walking tours in several major cities on several continents. This food tour around Amsterdam was awesome mainly due to our guide Jan. Food and drink was great and a nice representation of the local cuisine. We highly recommended this tour!
Caroline was very professional, informative and accommodating. Her depth of knowledge in the history, architecture and food scene was appreciated. All the food stops were excellent, we throughly enjoyed our walk through Amsterdam. Highly recommend this tour!
David was a pleasure! Very patient, informative of current events and history, and helped us all cope through a record hot day. Make sure you come hungry!!!
Absolutely fabulous!!!! Exceeded our expectations and beyond! Our guide Jackie made the experience!!!! The food and wine was sensational. The other guests on our tour enjoyed the experience every bit as much as we did! I live in Amsterdam and will book any time friends come to visit! Thank you so much!
Jackie was an exceptional host. We are so grateful for her insights and graciousness. It was more than a food tour. It was an experience and opportunity to understand the Dutch culture.
Jackie was absolutely fantastic. Every place we went was unique and felt like e hidden gem. Highly recommend!
What a delight in so many ways!! The food and wine from artisanal producers was delicious; the walk though the beautiful streets was a feast for the eyes; and the interesting historical perspective from our charming and funny host, Rudolf, made for an unforgettable afternoon. Can’t recommend this tour enough- don’t miss it!!
The food tour was so fun! Not only did we eat delicious food, we also learned a lot about the Amsterdam history.
We have been doing many tours in Europe this week and this one was by far the best! David was AMAZING and so interesting and informative! My teenagers actually listened and loved this tour as well. Great for all ages. It was a perfect way to learn about Amsterdam while eating amazing food and enjoying drinks. I highly recommend David as your tour guide. Overall best tour I have experienced!
Had a wonderful afternoon with Marc our guide and all the delicious stops along the way. He is knowledgeable, personable and interesting. The food was local and fresh. Book the tour, you won’t be disappointed!
Our tour guide, David, was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. The food on the tour was delicious and filling. We especially enjoyed the apple pie, fish, and Indonesian cuisine. Highly recommend for all those foodies!
Well worth the cost! Jan was an excellent guide and the food and wine we tried was delicious. The highlight of our tour was visiting a new tour stop at Design & Wine where we tasted wines from the Netherlands. Thanks to all of the purveyors who made this a great experience!
A great tour, led by Jan, who has lots of experience. Excellent food served as part of the tour, and we explored a part of Amsterdam that is not as touristy.
